The last dance
Iran's quiet colossus, and the model's contrarian favourite
Mehdi Taremi took one of the longest routes to European football imaginable. He was 27 before he left Iran for Portugal, an age when most forwards have already peaked or stalled. At Porto he scored 91 goals in four seasons and earned a move to Inter Milan. Now at Olympiacos at 33, he has 103 caps and 59 goals for Iran, the kind of numbers that make him one of the most prolific international strikers of his generation.
Iran's World Cup history is a story of resilience without reward: competitive in every group stage, occasionally brilliant, never quite through. In 2018 they were seconds from beating Portugal. In 2022 they lost to the USA in a match loaded with political tension. Taremi was central to both campaigns, the target man who makes Iran's counter-attacking system function.
The model rates Iran at 63% to beat New Zealand, a full nine percentage points above prediction market consensus. That gap is the largest on the card today, and it rests substantially on Iran's ability to control the match through Taremi's hold-up work and Jahanbakhsh's creativity. If Iran deliver, it validates the model's most aggressive call of the group stage. If they stumble, the contrarian thesis starts to crack.
