The last dance

The teenager who already won a continental title

Lamine Yamal became the youngest player in European Championship history at 16 years and 338 days, then scored a goal against France in the semi-final that made the record feel like a footnote. Spain won Euro 2024 in large part because a teenager from the La Masia academy did things that seasoned internationals could not. He finished the tournament with the Young Player award and an air of inevitability.

At Barcelona he has been just as disruptive: 25 caps and 6 goals for Spain before his 19th birthday, a first-team regular at one of the biggest clubs in the world, and a composite rating (0.934) that puts him among the highest-rated players at this tournament. The numbers say he is already elite. The eye test says he might be generational.

His first World Cup comes with Spain as one of the favourites, a squad built around Pedri, Dani Olmo, and a defensive structure that concedes very little. For most players, a debut World Cup at 19 would be about learning. For Yamal, it is about whether he can do at 19 what he did at 16: win a major tournament and make it look like he belongs there more than anyone else on the pitch.
