The last dance

The last of Uruguay's golden generation

When Uruguay reached the World Cup semi-finals in 2010 and announced that a nation of three million could still terrorise the world's biggest, Fernando Muslera was the goalkeeper behind it all. Through the years of Luis Suárez and Edinson Cavani, the snarling, defiant Celeste that punched so far above its size, he was the constant at the back.

A Galatasaray legend across more than a decade in Istanbul, he returned home to South America to wind down a career of more than 130 caps. He is the last man standing from Uruguay's golden generation, the bridge between an unforgettable era and whatever comes next.

At 40, a final World Cup would let him close the book on his own terms — the goalkeeper who guarded La Celeste's goal when it mattered most, taking his place one last time.

Save metrics ranked vs 16 keepers in the same major-tournament shot data (StatsBomb). Higher = better. Goals prevented (proxy) = pre-shot xG of on-target shots faced minus goals conceded. StatsBomb open data carries no post-shot xG, so this is an approximation — read as a relative ranking, not a literal goals-saved total. Penalties and shootouts are excluded. This keeper is below our sample bar, so their rates rest on a small number of shots — read the percentiles as indicative.
