The last dance
The Bosnian Diamond's final chapter
Edin Džeko is Bosnia and Herzegovina — its all-time leading scorer with 73 international goals, its most-capped outfield player, the face it has shown the world for the better part of twenty years. The 'Bosnian Diamond' came up the hard way, a striker who only filled out and broke through in his early twenties before Wolfsburg, Manchester City, Roma and Inter turned him into one of his generation's great centre-forwards.
His defining act in national colours came in 2014, when his goals helped carry Bosnia to the only World Cup in the young country's history. For a nation forged in the aftermath of war, that summer meant something far beyond football.
At 40, still scoring, he would be chasing a return to the stage he last graced more than a decade ago. A second World Cup for Bosnia — and a last one for the player who has carried them — would be the perfect final page of a remarkable story.
