The sweeper-keeper's last stand

Manuel Neuer did not just keep goal; he changed what keeping goal meant. The way he patrolled the space behind his defence, sweeping up through-balls thirty yards from his line, made the phrase 'sweeper-keeper' part of the language and forced a generation of goalkeepers to relearn the position from scratch.

At his peak he was untouchable — World Cup winner in 2014 with the Golden Glove, the spine of a dominant Bayern Munich, a near-decade as Germany's undisputed No. 1. Then came the injuries: a leg broken in a skiing accident, surgeries that cost him the better part of a season, each one another supposed ending.

At 40 he is back in the projected German eleven, jersey No. 1 still his. For a goalkeeper who has spent his career making the impossible look routine, one more World Cup would be a fitting last word.
