The last dance
A home World Cup for Mexico's eternal No. 1
Some images outlast the tournaments that produced them. Guillermo Ochoa's wall of saves against Brazil in 2014 — the diving stop from Neymar, the reflex on the line — is one of them, the night a goalkeeper single-handedly held a host nation to a draw and became a folk hero back home.
At 40, 'Memo' Ochoa has been Mexico's last line of defence across the best part of two decades, 151 caps and counting, his name a fixture every June a World Cup comes around. He has carried the weight of a country that expects, and absorbed its disappointments without ever flinching from the spotlight.
2026 is Mexico's tournament: a co-host, the opening fanfare, a nation watching from its own stadiums. For Ochoa to walk out one more time, at home, in front of the supporters who have sung his name for twenty years, would be a farewell written exactly as it should be.

Save metrics ranked vs 15 keepers in the same major-tournament shot data (StatsBomb). Higher = better. Goals prevented (proxy) = pre-shot xG of on-target shots faced minus goals conceded. StatsBomb open data carries no post-shot xG, so this is an approximation — read as a relative ranking, not a literal goals-saved total. Penalties and shootouts are excluded.
